Nowadays, with many fake diamonds circulating in the market, it becomes necessary to spot real diamonds, but the question here arises is how? As laypeople, we lack expertise in identifying authentic diamonds, which may sometimes lead to an ultimate scam. Indeed, such proficiency comes from years of experience and thorough knowledge.

So have you ever bought a diamond and wondered whether it is real or fake, one simple and most reliable method is through the certificates, but when there are no such certificates available. In such a situation, what should be done? How could you test its authenticity? Let’s find out some of the easiest experiments on finding real and fake diamonds.

What is a real diamond?

Diamonds are precious gemstones formed of pure carbon atoms arranged in crystal structure under the proper combination of heat and pressure. They’re clear and colorless made of 99.95% single atom i.e, carbon, celebrated as an epitome of brilliance and shine, symbolising the sanctity of elegance throughout life. Diamonds are the hardest-known substance in mankind's history, they possess unparalleled durability, brilliant shine, and value lasting for generations. Such diamonds are REAL diamonds.

Test at home to know the real diamonds:

1. Loupe or small magnifying glass: The most common method to identify the diamond is by looking through the loupe. A loupe is a small magnifying glass especially made for inspecting diamonds and gemstones, it enables you to see the diamond clearly with all imperfections and impurities. Experts said that “the diamonds are not flawless, there exist some imperfection in the carbon and a fake gem will be perfect.” So, a real one will not be as perfect while you look through the loupe. Next, while you look at the edges of the diamonds, the real diamonds have sharp edges, and the fake ones have rounded ones. And finally look at the craftsmanship, if the finishing is of poor quality then it's for sure a fake diamond.

2. Diamond tester: you can easily find a diamond tester online or in any jewelry store, using such a tester on the diamond is the quickest way to differentiate between real and fake diamonds. Thus, by pressing it against the diamond it tests the diamond's thermal conductivity which is unique to real diamonds making it easier to confirm its authenticity.

3. Weight test: another theory of weight test, where the diamond authenticity is determined based on its weight. You can put the diamond on your hand and examine its weight, the heavier the diamond the more real it is.

4. Line test: it is most favorite among gemologists, draw a dot or a line on a plain white page then place the diamond exactly above such dot or line. The dot or line won't be visible in real diamonds but It will be visible in case of fake diamonds.

5. Fog test: one of the most popular tests to identify the authenticity of a diamond is the Fog test. For such a test hold a diamond close to your mouth, breathe on it, and create a fog on it. Then examine whether fog or moisture remains longer for a second on the diamond, if yes then it is CZ(cubic zirconia), moissanite, or other fake diamonds. And on the real diamond, the fog or moisture disperses instantly due to its high thermal conductivity.

6. Hardness test: take a diamond and gently rub it against the stone or rough wall, the real diamond, being the hardest substance will remain completely unscathed without the slightest scratch on it but the fake diamond such as CZ (cubic zirconia), glass or maisonette is much softer and will show visible scratch and damage.

7. Send a diamond for a gem certificate: for reliable and trustworthy examination, send a diamond to renowned institutes such as IGI, GIA or others, they’ll provide the certificate of diamond based on its 4Cs.

8. There are other tests such as water and heat tests: in the water test, put a diamond in a mug of water If it drowns and settles down. it is a real diamond as real diamonds are heavier and if it doesn’t then it is a fake one. In a heat test, put a diamond near fire or flame, if it doesn’t remain hot for a longer time it is real, due to its high thermal conductivity.
